Don't forget the wide range of presence and movement detectors using PIR and doppler radar technologies. I have used the Limpkin breakout for the HB-100.

There are also ratiometric Hall effect sensors which can be useful to replace a rotary potentiometer with no wear issues as well as linear displacement and close proximity magnetic field strength. I also have (but haven't tried) some magnetoresistive sensors which claim to have much greater sensitivity than Hall effect sensors so perhaps greater displacements are measurable. As the magnetic field strength is exponential, even a linear Hall effect or magnetoresistive sensor might need a look-up table and some interpolation.
