Starting out, lets see if it will glow

A project log for Electric Furnace

Furnaces heat stuff, often metal. This project aims to develop a simple, cheap and robust electric furnace.

As I already had a semi-decent coil from a different project. I decided to hook it up and test what would happen. The resistance of the coil at room temperature was 1,8 Ohm. A 50V supply was connected direcly to the coil and the temperature quickly went up to somewhere around 700°C.

This is the coil before the test.

This video shows what happens when 1300W (but this quickly declines, more on that later) is dumped into small amounts of steel. The server supply activates the output after 5-8 seconds on start up. Clearly the coil itself looses structural integrity when it heats up, some kind of support is needed.

(You might want to turn the sound down before pressing play, server supplies are noisy. For instant action goto 00:15.)
