when I showed this to my dad he was like "wait a second" and pulled a similar display out of a drawer. 8 digits, 5x7, all dots settable, serial display.

I swiped one (red) from an old old cell-phone, has an epoxy-blob and few-pin ribbon-cable, but no documentation anywhere... But, turns out they actually put test-points for every row/col(!). Been meaning to hack it, since these dot-things look so groovy. Cool you can buy 'em, now.
