Out of pure convenience, I wish my smart TV would control the volume of sound going through my amp and speakers (audiophiles gasp in the background). Having two remotes feels like and insult, while buying a universal remote feels more so (Is it a bloody smart TV, guys!? Is it really!?). My amp is DIY, so... no toslink, no bluetooth, no wifi, no nothing. The RCA is the way. Or was. The world moved on, so I am the only one left with this problem.

The plan:

  1. Get cheap economy DAC box with toslink to RCA
  2. mod an IR receiver into it, which is programmed with the volume control codes from original remote.
  3. Then drive a pair of digital potentiometers to control the volume just before signals exit the DAC.
