A project log for Vending Machine for Birds

Simple, inexpensive bird feeder that dispenses peanuts in exchange for dropping stuff in a hole. A vending machine for clever birds.

Ok, reassembled with some improvements in the electronics and ready to try out on the balcony.

I cleaned up the circuit, made the changes mentioned in the previous update, except I'm still using a TIP41C for the motor switch.

I also added a timer (555 astable) and a DPDT toggle switch to replace the SPST one I used to turn it on before.

Flip one way and it just dispenses nuts for stuff.

Flip it the other and it also dispenses a nut every 45 min or so. I'll be using this mode to try to get birds to trust that it's a source of food and not dangerous without having to go put food out there every so often. I'll also put some cig butts, botlecaps and small litter on the platform hoping they will occasionally knock something in and start to put it all together.

One good argument against these kind of feeders is that birds can just as easily find food as they can litter. For me the point of this is not to solve or even make a scratch on a problem like littering. It would be a nice-to-have, but I'm just hoping I can get them to give me anyhing at all. This with a BOM cost as low as possible, ideally less than 20 EUR.

I just moved, so don't have a relationship with these birds. I fed crows, magpies, jackdaws and pigeons in the same spot in Vondelpark every day for little over a year, and those birds are already quite used to people. Two crows would follow me all the way home. They knew where I lived :)

Here it's a little different. I live next to a park, but the birds are more wild and not as used to being around people. They are getting used to me, but this will take some time. There are also way more rats here, so glad they won't be able to get into the machine if I end up putting it at ground level.

So tomorrow I'll put it on by front balcony in timer mode and see what happens.

In the meantime, I'll upload new schematics and a video to show the functionality.

My next added feature will probably be a Rasperry Pi Zero-based WIFI camera that wakes up, records and streams when the PIR sensor is triggered and goes to sleep when the sensors are off.
