We did it. Mikkeli Maker Day, as part of the global Hackaday World Create Day, was the biggest maker event in city of Mikkeli and the whole region this far. You know, Mikkeli is a really small town but we got over 120 people visiting the event. The day was an exploration into maker movement, hackerspaces and the world of technology. And it was awesome to be part of a bigger, global movement.

We had things such as robots, electronics projects, 3D printers, self-made musical instruments, motored longboard, DIY game consoles and whatnot on display. We showcased how cool and fun it is to create, learn and share it with others. There was also a spoiler from the upcoming Hacklab Mikkeli Robot War competition season 1 ("Robosota" in Finnish). Finally, we also had a crafting corner where people could try out building beginner friendly electronics projects.

The motivation for the event was to grow and foster the emerging local hacker culture. We wanted to let everyone know that creating and learning is for everyone. We talked to people about Hackaday prize but mostly just encouraged everyone to think and dream what they wanted to make. We hope that hackerspaces are a place to do that.

A lot of new people were exposed to hacking and creating. The local hacker community is sure to enter the Hackaday Prize 2017 competition. Here are a few photos from the event. I'll try to dodge the photos with people who might not want themselves posted online.
