8x8 rainbowduino display running the entropy library listed in the article above,
device has buttons on the bottom as feet so the user just presses the top to 'roll',
device contains lipo battery and charging circuit,
device can act as a countdown timer for auctions (random time or specific times),
device has mode button on the side,
modes are:
standby, 1D6, 2D6, time select, timer, brightness, and mute.
different colours for different numbers (1 – cyan, 2 – magenta, 3 – orange, 4 – red, 5 – yellow, 6 – green, Double – White)
These are based on monopoly property colours.

display layout of 2d6 for 12 will be:

3d printed enclosure would be nice in the future

This is a board game helper device, originally designed to replace dual-dice used in Monopoly (because someone kept rolling them off the table or 'demolishing' houses and hotels on properties...).

For randomness, this has been created using the Entropy library for Arduino. In addition to the standard 2D6 needed for monopoly, this has a 1D6, and brightness control. We found we needed a random timer for auctions in monopoly, and later, a 30 second timer for the game Articulate!. Other times include 15, 45, and 60 seconds.

The device contains a piezo buzzer which buzzes to signal the end of a countdown, and in all but the random time beeps the last 3 seconds.

It also has a charge/boost board for the LiPo battery (600mAh) and can be charged from USB, estimated lifetime is about 6 hours for average use at full brightness (plenty of time for a decent game session).

a .gif of the roll animation... the colours don't come out very well in the video, but you can see them reflected on the wall behind :-)

    will add youtube stuff soon

ok, so now pretty much all of it is done...

from left to right, we have:

    the LED array

    the rainbowduino V3 board

a lipo battery (the piezo will go here too)

a board which supports the switch

a board that holds the switch in place

some height adjustment bits with some springy sponge (switch spring is not strong enough on its own)

this fits into the box which contains the lipo charge/boost board, mode switch and power switch (some burn marks from a heat gun)

After some experimenting with the rainbowduino and playing with custom fonts, the result is the following:

now to add the features... :-)
