Further testing has shown that the laser range finding system is quite reliable up to about 2 meters in a well lit room. I've added some limits so that data for points beyond the 2 meter mark are rejected in order to avoid inconsistent data. 

Checking the graphical representation of the laser data shows that the data is very reliable, indeed measurements seem quite repeatable.
