The Zephyr Ion vaporizer already has the ability to be controlled from a PC through a Mini USB port on the back of the unit. However the existing client software is buggy and Windows only. For a number of reasons, this setup is not practical for remote operation.
The existing functionality is handled through a CH340 USB to Serial bridge, which connects to the ATmega MCU. The CH340 will be replaced by an Esp8266 module which will allow the device to be controlled by Home Assistant via MQTT.
