Right you are. If you or anyone else could find a simple way to achieve this action, with everyday, common materials, that would be great! One of the reasons this is all opensource is so that others can come in and improve upon this design.
I will say this, I have learned quite a lot about microswitches since starting this project.

That's not a real micro switch. It looks like one, but is only a simple switch.
It doesn't have the snap action of a microswitch with the flat spring and curve spring arrangement.
