Can HackADay figure out what to do with Coffee Pods?
Sean Hodgins wrote 03/15/2016 at 05:09 • 0 pointsSince people apparently refuse to give up using the terribly polluting coffee pods like Keurig and Nespresso, and there seems to be no way to actually recycle the damn things because they're a mixture of plastics(or so I've read), maybe HAD could come up for some good use for these things. With the new 2016 HAD Contest, I think some good ideas could possibly be huge contenders, that is, if there actually is a use for them at all.
What say you HackADay?

I've seen two lamps made from recycled pods. Nestle is supposed to be recycling pods when users send them back (I dont know how many are actual sent back) http://www.nestle-nespresso.com/newsandfeatures/best-environmental-initiative-nespresso-france-wins-award-for-its-recycling-strategy

Nothing is impossible. There seem to be inroads being made into figuring out how to separate laminates from their host materials, look at this case of plastic-aluminium laminates (article) http://www.gizmag.com/plastic-aluminum-laminate-packaging-recycling/35388/

I am afraid the pods are not of much use. The only thing the city of Hamburg ( Germany ) could think of to eliminate the problem was banning the pods.

I'm not sure I see how the coffee pods are much/any more wasteful than a simple to-go cup from any cafe... And, if anything, they're certainly more hacker-friendly than one of those plastic lids.
They could probably be useful for creative-things aimed at kids, like they do with egg-cartons. And what about simply using them as ready-prepped(?!) seed-sprout containers. I bet some seeds wouldn't mind growing in those used grounds.
