ESP8266 programming on Arduino IDE: first time setup, do not see ESPTool in programmer menu?
MakerNewbie wrote 05/24/2016 at 01:24 • 2 pointsI just purchased a generic ESP8266 dev board, just installed the arduino IDE (1.6.9), and then because the ESP board wasn't showing up, I added it on Board Manager (http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json). I selected the generic ESP8266 module as the board.
I believe I also need to change the Programmer to esptools, but even after restarting the IDE, I'm not finding that option; what I see is:
* AVR ISP
*AVRISP mkll
* USBtinyISP
* ArduinoISP
* USBasp
* Parallel Progammer
* Arduino as ISP
* Arduino Gemma
* Atmel STK500 Development Board
* BusPirate as ISP
Has the IDE changed in a way that I should be using one of these, or if not, what steps do I need to take to have esptools show up as an option?
Thank you!

I followed this SparkFun tutorial:
https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/esp8266-thing-hookup-guide/installing-the-esp8266-arduino-addon
But rather than the SparkFun Thing, I used NodeMCU 1.0 for my particular board. Sounds like you're there already.
I don't recall changing the actual programmer. I vaguely remember thinking this was odd and not much else. I'll check my setup later.

Yeah, I can confirm I was able to upload blinky for ESP8266 using programmer settings such as AVRISP mkII or ArduinoISP.
I looked a little more into this and found that it actually ignores the selected programmer in favor of esptool. You can see this for yourself if you go to File->Preferences and select the radio checks for "Show verbose output for () compilation () upload".
So this is one of those cases where you could've just plowed ahead. Probably you already have since this was days ago.

Yes; File/preferences/additional Boards manager urls
then under board manager, I installed the esp8266 by esp8266 community. there is a drop-down for version, so I selected the highest available, 2.2 (options were 2.2, 2.1, 2.0, and 1.6.5-947-g39819f0). In board manager, i show 2.2 installed
thank you for any suggestions or clarifications on what I should do next

Where did you add it? In File ... Preferences using "Additional Boards Manager URLs:" option?
