3D model files: .obj or .stl?
Evan Juras wrote 03/12/2017 at 19:48 • 0 pointsI noticed lots of projects here have uploaded their 3D models as .stl files. Is there a reason to use .stl over .obj? What's the difference? Does one work better with 3D printers than the other?

Thanks, guys, based on these answers, I changed the .obj file in my project page to a .stl file :D

While STL is just a polygon format, it's standard for 3D printing industry and most integrated software packages that come with printers expect models in this format by default. Providing STL files therefore should make it easier for others to print your models. Blender can be used to convert STL to OBJ and back if needed.

yes .stl files are the defacto standard for 3d printing.

For me, I use Cura, that only takes stl and convert them to gcodes. Most of 3d prints website also gives stl files. However, I just have a basic knowledge about this.
