How does the shipment process happen from the Hackaday store.I bought the Dslogic+scope add on+ stick vise on the 9th of this month destined for Kenya. I noted there was no way of me knowing if the Items i just bought were in stock on the site, I just assumed they were. I just received an acknowledgement email stating that if I bought Items that were out of stock, they would be shipped only after they are restocked. Like...how would one know?
Thanks Jasmine--that alleviates any concerns I had. The line about editorial independence really hit home. And if HaD ever releases a line of socks, I think you'd sell enough pairs to cover hosting for at least a few weeks!
This looks like small-scale commercialization of a few projects featured on HaD.io, along with some HaD swag and a few other odds and ends. It's intriguing and exciting for folks that want to sell their projects; I'm guessing Supplyframe helped source components and so forth. However, I can't help but be concerned with HaD tarnishing its reputation as an unbiased source of news related to open-source hardware and interesting product hackery. One phrase in the About Us section--"We don't so much 'review' the products (the fact that they're here already means we approve)"--makes it look like you're picking favorites.
Talk to us, mysterious HaD.com owner. What are your plans with this site? Is this part of a broader plan to capitalize on the recent hardware investment madness while pushing the conversation towards open-source products? Are you building a platform for folks to sell their creations to the public, sort of like Shapeways but with more electronics content? How will you avoid alienating your finicky audience, whose perception of profit-seeking motive can be so negative that any commercialization risks splintering the community? Is this why you're dropping so much cash on a contest with so few limitations?
It seems like a logical step to sell user generated projects, when they are open source and hackaday helps out with small runs to sell them in their store. They would have to "pick favorites" that would at least sell 100 copies though, so it can't become like shapeways. Concepts like tindie or etsy may be interesting for hackaday.io too. They not only have a community that produces stuff but also would like to buy the stuff being produced here. One could say, that it was an evil plan from the beginning, a 3 phase concept to exploit the community for capital. But servers have to be paid and if it is fair and hackers and hackaday.com will profit, I don't see a big base to argue about that. But then again it's the hackaday community.
I was somewhat surprised to hear them opening an online store in the middle of running THP, but I suspect you're right about the store and contest being related. I also agree it's tough for Hackaday to sell stuff, by maintaining it's credibility, but Make as done that for while and I don't see it ruining their community.
Agreed--good call on Make, it has worked for them. Overall, keeping HaD.io sustainable is important for all of us, and this seems like a fairly harmless way to do it.
Looking forward to buying a giant drone from the store, Peter.
Their plan was to have a sellable product after the THP so a platform to sell this makes even more sense to me now.
I would definitely buy the tricorder project :) i have a thing for unintentially hurting my self and i can't see blood so something with rotor blades is nothing for me :D
