CH341A linux. I am running ubuntu 18.04 and the ch341a shows up as QinHeng Electronics CH341 in EPP/MEM/I2C mode, EPP/I2C adapter. Not as a UART. How can I change this

You can configure in which mode it is by moving a jumper somewhere on the board. On this kind of boards, you have to put a jumper between 2 pins (I can look on mines if you want): http://www.zoobab.com/ch341-usb-spi-i2c-uart-isp-dongle

There's a daemon on linux called UDEV that manages this. It looks in /etc/udev/rules.d for a file describing the device inserted (usually by VID/PID) and takes instructions from the file on how to handle the device. Look at the files in that dir you already have to get a feel for it, go online and research UDEV, and search google for "UDEV CH341A" and you'll probably find someone has made a UDEV file for that specific device.
Monitor /var/log/syslog to see what UDEV does with the device when inserted, it'll show the decisions UDEV takes during the enumeration process. Type "tail -f /var/log/syslog" to see this happen in real time.
