I have worked before in the Development Process of Medical Equipment, briefly in the Development of an Amplifier to Supply an Implant with Power. In Literature, I saw several attempts of using RFID Technology for the Implants. But RFID has several drawbacks when it comes to Chips that are under the Skin. So often every Part of the Implant and Reader is Designed specifically for the Task. That has advantage and disadvantages. With the Rise of NFC Technology, I see the Chance even for a Student like me to put something together that is small, efficient, and Powerfull. The End result is supposed to be an Implant-Platform with a wide variety of applications. The First Target Application is in Animal Trials and for really Brave People. But its also imaginable to use it as a Base for Blood sugar Measuring Device that only needs to draw Blood owns. And can be used with a Smartphone or even better it Communicates directly with your insulin Pump, he Sky is the Limit.
So first Design Decisions were made and discarded. First I wanted to use an NHS3152 since this Chip has NFC connectivity and an integrated ARM M0+ Controller. It would be a grade trade for the size of the Implant. But since this Chip isn't able to Power external Devices I had to Look for something else. I settled for a combination of an NXP NT3H2111 for the NFC Data transfer and the Energy Harvesting and an STM32l041f6 ARM M0+ Microcontroller as the primary Brain of the Unit.
