I am designing an electromagnet that will support up to 4 lbs of force. I am going to use a closed loop control system to "levitate" a metal plate beneath the electromagnet. By measuring how much current the closed loop control is requesting this will allow me to accurately determine how much weight is being supported by the electromagnet.
