Week 4 - One (potentially) Great New Idea
10/21/2018 at 16:59 • 0 comments12/10/2018
Crank the Box
To enhance our ideas, we search around the internet to get further inspiration and to strengthen our ideas. We read through a few articles, looked at some art inspirations online and watched some youtube videos about commercials done by companies around the world. After awhile, we stumble upon a great video done by Coca-Cola many years ago. The idea is called The Friendship Twist. Here's how it works:
1. Take a Coke from the fridge.
2. To open the coke, they require to have someone else with another coke and work together.
3. Both people have to attach the bottle caps head to each other and turn clockwise from their respective sides.
4. And WHALA, the coke bottle was opened.
From this point, we concluded the idea of sharing coke with people. And we ended up with the core experience of connecting people of KL together.
We added some more extra features for our description for this particular project.
- Faster speed, more feedback (etc. lights, SFX, music, patterns)
- Share and exchange
- Get rewards
- Change the question mark with a spinning board - “Crank with Friends”
- Indications (eg. speed-meter, spiral tube)
- 4 lights that glows when one side spins (like a health bar)

Squeeze Kl
We are still deciding on which material to choose for our miniature buildings from plushie toys to silicone rubber to life-vest plastics. And for the stuffings, we are searching from cotton to synthetic fibre. And sensor materials from your typical force resistor interfacing to flex sensor that cost an arm and a leg if we ended up choosing that.

Week 3 - Second Pitching & Further Refinement
10/11/2018 at 01:23 • 0 comments4/10/2018
We presented on that day and apparently, just as expected, everyone liked the Squeeze KL idea as this ticks all the check marks of the assignment requirements, unlike the other 2. We asked for some further critiques and advices for the other 2 ideas to know what mistakes we shouldn’t repeat.
Ron implied the idea titled "Your Life, Your choices" has a good idea but a horrible execution. It’s way too complicated and unfocused to the point I’m sure I’m putting everyone to sleep.
The “Train Through” idea isn’t very intriguing or interesting to draw people in since the core experience is to present information to the audience. It’s almost like lecturing.
And last for the best, once again, they liked “Squeeze KL”. The idea and execution tied together perfectly.
7/10/2018
We decided to tweak the “Your Life, Your Choices” idea by taking the core experience and make it into something more interesting and simple.
After some time of more brainstorming and more research, we landed on this concept of a jack-in-the-box with a couple of tweaks here and there. This is how it basically works.
Crank the Box
The box has 4 crank handles on each side.To play the game, it requires at least 2 people to play because one person cannot control all 4 sides by him/herself.
Players has to turn the cranks, each in the desired direction and speed, all at the same time.
Once the precise speed is reached, there will be a gift that will automatically pop-out from the top of the box as a reward.
The gift will be a mini stress-ball and each individual stress-ball will be different from the other in terms of size (some slightly bigger), texture, color.
Squeeze KL
For the Squeeze KL, we found a way to make use of our material, silicone (or something similar to that), and implement it with digital medium.-we are going to use this component called FSR (force sensitive resistor)
-we are going to put the FSR inside the middle of the silicone
-when people squeezes the silicone, the computer can detect how hard the person squeezes and the harder they squeeze, the brighter the light will emit, the more the sign board will
-when the person squeezes one silicone object at a certain pressure, the sign board will fill up slowly

Week 2 - First Pitching & Critique
10/06/2018 at 16:59 • 0 comments27/9/2018
Once we are done presenting our ideas, every single one of them were not approved with the exception of the 4th one, which basically is touching the surface of the project. So to get ourselves to step in the right direction, Ronald Chua and Lin Yiew, our lectures, recommends us to just ditch everything that we presented to them and start over from scratch. And that's what we exactly did from that day.
2/10/2018
Me and Ang are working tirelessly, They sketched, discussed, brainstormed, searched and read through articles relating to the terms such as "urban", "street", "city life", "nightlife", etc. Here are some of the new ideas that we have came up with.
#1 FOOD IN
Core: Informative for food in KL
Big Idea:
KL have a lot of good food. From traditional to the modern, local to foreign. I want to bring surprise or information for the audience.
The idea is to have the machine that randoms food location.
Audience will pick an area in KL that they want have food. The machine will random a food location in the area. The food location is on a nice design card. There is a QR code on top of the card to scan to know more detail about it.
Why random? Surprise, get to know more something out of what they know.
So people is very restic to an area of food because the place they work and stay. They have no time to find out every food around. By random the food location, it force people to know get something they maybe not familiar and new to try out.
And it is kind of experience that you don’t expect anything and experience it instead. Expectation X Experience, is good to get expectation out of the box before trying things out so you get the experience 100%.
#2 Mamak Chain
(Keychain, Store chain, Chain reaction culture and food)
Core: Sharing one of the most unique food culture from Malaysia - Mamak
Big Idea:
Having a Capsule Toy machine / vending machine.
Audience put in notes to get a keychain of Mamak’s food toy.
(random / selected) slight different experience
Audience get the capsule/product inside will include the toy, QR code, coupon.
QR code is to let the audience know about the food and where they can get it around KL area. Coupon is a free food that follows the keychain you buy. EX: you get a nasi lemak and you go to ABC, show them the coupon and get a free nasi lemak.
Why?
As locals, fresh to get something out of our food culture and its make people love more about this unique food culture that Malaysia have. As foreign, is a fun way to know this unique food and culture that Malaysia have.
#3 Mr. Pewterson’s pewter bowl
-insp. by monopoly & koshi
make people appreciate pottery art
-will be am informative game about making a pewter bowl
-mr Pewterson is going through an adventure of finding materials to make pewter bowl for his dog
-through his adventures, Pewterson will stumble upon random tools
-to tackle through obstacles, player has to follow Pewterson’s instructions of how to tackle the obstacle (the wooden table will light up which step is next)
-subconciously making pewter
-at the end of the game, player has completed making a mini-pewter bowl
#4 NIGHTLIFE
Core Experience
-stress relief <-
-enjoyment <-
Why people came to nightclubs?
-to take women home
-relieving stress of 9 to 5 job
-make new friends
*do a game that can get people to make friends
*bring the life of nightlife into a smaller platform
-make yourself into a DJ (simplified DJ)
-make people enjoy their own music and appreciate of how much work a Dj is putting
WHY DJ?
-DJ is the person who brings life and energy to the room
-able to alter the original music/s to his/her style
WHY make a simple DJ kit?
-people love music
-people enjoy creating new stuffs
-when people completed the music, they would feel happy and sense of accomplishment
-the experience will be more immersed instead of virtual buttons
A simple DJ kit (simulation)
-people are given a short tutorial of what the buttons and sliders effects are for
-they are given a sample music (which is a bad music), then they have to improve it to their own taste
-once the music plays, they have to improvise of what changes can they make along the way
-once done, they can replay their music creation and let the crowd hear what changes did they do
3/10/2018
Once we get to meet Ron, we are adviced that the ideas are either too complex to be done and many of these can be done into a simple smartphone app. So now we are under pressure to either come up with other ideas or to enhance the ideas we had with even more research. Thankfully, Ang came up with one amazing idea "what if we make Kuala Lumpur into a stress-ball". Ron nodded his head cheerfully but we still are not done with everything yet.
That very night, Ang and I are, once again, working tirelessly trying to get more and more ideas. Eventually, we didn't came up with anything and we decided to revisit the older ideas to pitch for the very next day. Here are the 3 ideas we decided to pitch for the next day.
#1 Train Through
Core: Share the history of KL train station / love and know about the old and unique building
Big Idea:
People take this public transport and old building as granted, but how much people know about the history of it?
To have a few model of the train from old to new, representing the history from old to new for the train station. Lastly a station model to share the unique design of the station. When 1 train model light up the screen will show the period of history about the train station.
#2 Your Life, Your Choices
Core Experience/purpose:
-knowing who you can trust
-how other people can influence you
-(Bonus) make new friends
Big Idea: We are thought since when we’re young as how much important is teamwork. But since not all of us are extroverts (people who prefers to work with other people) we prefer to work by ourselves as we have more control over the project.
Interactive board game + decision making + consequences
The Execution:
-Game is about the journey of one’s person throughout his life in KL
-For example, if the player makes bad decisions, he becomes a drug addict
-the game requires 2 people
-the two player will stand the opposite sides of each other
-player 1 will be playing on the game platform (2 screens and 2 buttons to press)
-the left screen is for the character’s avatar
Player 2 will receive the game’s script (the answers to the game itself)
HOW TO PLAY:
Player 1 select his/her avatar gender
Player 2 can choose to be a good or a bad influencer
Player 1 tells player 2 what picture appears on the right screen
Player 2 will explain what the picture represents and what decisions does player 1 has to continue
Each decision has consequences, player 2 recommends which one to choose
Once Player 1 made a decision, Player 2 gets to see whether Player 1 makes a good decision or not
And repeats
If game turns out a good ending, both player will be congratulated
If game turns out bad ending, player 1 will given a “game over”
Why board games?
-board games are usually played by more than 1 people
-get to communicate with other players in person (feels more personal)
#3 Squeeze KL
Core: Stress relieving
Big Idea: City people are busy and stressful everyday. So at night, they come to party venues to enjoy themselves and relief their stressful days.
Nightlife (ways) + Stress relieving (reason)
Music + Stress Ball
The Execution:
-We will make a miniature city of KL, only including KL landmarks
-Neon light sign board to attract the audience
-The buildings will be made out of flexible materials (eg. silicone)
-Buildings will shine brightly
-Searchlight (moving Batman light) will move on buildings
-An instruction kit beside the miniature city to guide the audience
How to play?
-The player gets to do whatever they want to the city (eg. squeeze, stretch, pull, punch)
-When you interact with the city’s monuments:
-a music note will play
-building lights will blink
-sign board will slowly get charge
-Once the sign board charges, the mini-city will play with it’s lights (eg. light flickering fast, searchlight will move fast, etc.) as celebration

Week 1 - Initialising Stage
10/06/2018 at 11:05 • 0 comments20/09/2018
On the 1st day, everyone were being briefed what this project is all about and what can we expect to learn while working on it. The following is the brief on what we will be working on over the next 4 months.
For groups of 2 people, design an interactive experiential exhibit for
Creative Arts segment of an annual local
event called Urbanscapes
( http://urbanscapes.com.my/ ). Your creation
must fit within a 50 cm (length) x 50 cm
(width) x 50 cm (height) cubic space, and
adheres to the overall theme of the event.Prepare five different ideas, and create a presentation deck with a maximum of 3 slides per idea to pitch your projects to us in Week 2 . Only three ideas will be selected at the end of this pitching. Refine these ideas and prepare a presentation deck with a maximum of 5 slides per idea for your next round of pitching in Week 3 . Only two ideas will be selected at the end of this pitching.
Taking into account feedback or suggestions received throughout the pitching process, refine your two ideas and presentation deck (use as many slides as necessary) to pitch again in Week 4 . Only one idea will be selected for each team to focus on by end of Week 5 .
Upon approval you can begin the full building phase of your project. Prior to final approval, quick prototypes for proof-of-concept can be built as necessary if it helps to illustrate your ideas. Throughout, you are encouraged to consult us in making any preparations.
Ang Chen Earn and Wilson Wijaya - the log writer - will be the people covering this particular group.
25/09/2018
This is the day when we started brainstorming different ideas by doing some research of the topic Urbanscapes, playing some arcade games, watching creative commercials (like the Coca-Cola share the can) on Youtube, etc. Since we came up with a bunch of ideas, we need to strike some of them off to only 5 work-able ones. Here are the following:
Idea 1
-Whack-a-mole + Tap Tap
-Instead pop-out mole, replace lights & effects
-Player needs to hit the button that lights up
-Each hit will form a music note
Idea 2
-Feel the concern to listen
-Visualise the feel with colors
-Can interfere the environment with gestures or controller
-Create your piece of art
Idea 3
-Require 2-4 players
-Players need to tap the button that lights up
-Each tap will form a music note
-With a good team, the song will flow nicely
Idea 4
-Player speaks
-Screen will display abstract art
-Done by caligraphy brush or graffiti
Idea 5
-Screen will display a floating polygon or organic graphic
-Player makes gestures
Eg. one finger, pinching with 2 fingers, swipe left or right with 3 fingers
-The polygon/organic graphic will change its change its shape or form
