I've been looking at Kenwood VC-H1's (standalone SSTV handheld device) on eBay for a while, I think they are silly expensive for what it is but I haven't seen any alternative devices. It's possible to use smartphone, sure... but it would also be nice to have a stand alone device that's self contained, you may also need your phone for something else while transceiveing. That is what the goal for this project is. Maybe it will be something more than an SSTV camera too.
