Block Printing is a creative handicraft process in which hand crafted wooden blocks are dipped in ink and pressed on cloth in a variety of patterns. Indian craft market share is around 40000 crore | of this exports alone are 16500 crore. Social enterprises deploying programs to employ the physically challenged in Block Printing have been struggling to lower the attrition rate.
The conventional process involves repetitively lifting heavy blocks and hitting it with hand. This causes is extremely painful for the palm area and shoulders.
We are designing a method for the artisan to enjoy the therapeutic and creative aspect of block printing using a device which keeps the block in lifted position and uses a linear actuator to hit the block.
We expect this to encourage newbies (inclusive of people with upper limb disabilies) to try block printing as a career option.
