Back in the days (1980's), we used ripple binary counters a lot in discrete circuits. When the 1 sq. inch contest returned, I was inspired to build a board for a fairly common circuit that uses a 555 and a CD4020 / CD 4040 / CD 4060 to drive a bunch of LEDs'.
The main board has just a handful of parts and connects directly to a 9V battery. LEDs are on three daughter boards that are soldered to the main board.
Not sure if it still qualifies for the 1 sq. inch challenge, but maybe it could still be used to dive in to SMD soldering and improve skills.

Details

Using the 1 sq inch contest as an excuse to whip up a 555 based LED blinky thing.
All project files and details on the Github repo.

Awaiting PCB's and parts to assemble a couple of these.
