Description

The WyLed free-form sculpture reacts to sound and blinks a 4-digit LED display. An ATTiny85 provides a little brain, and the TM1638 handles all input and output.

This started as an exploration of the TM1638; an LED display driver that is kind of like a souped up version of the MAX7219. It can handle 10x 7-segments (plus decimal point) and also supports keyboard scanning for up to 24 buttons.

All put together with an ad-hoc wire design and, yes, some leaves (seemed like a good idea at the time) and some extra LEDs on the sculpture for "atmosphere".

The result is .. interesting? a little creepy? .. but certainly useless!

Details

An electret sound detector circuit provides a binary signal based on a preset threshold (adjustable with a pot). This is presented to the TM1638 as a “key” input via a 2N7000 mosfet.

The ATTiny85 has a simple program that drives 4-digit LED 7-segment display via the TM1638 (a pair of “eyes”). It blinks (with some random fuzz in the blink algorithm) when sound is detected.
