I started to have this need several years ago when I started to work from home every day. My work laptop got increasingly locked down until pure software solutions for keyboard and mouse sharing, like Synergy, either stopped working or were flaky. I wanted a hardware USB switcher, just for keyboard and mouse, that I could control via software.
