One of the main issues i run into while working form home with a distant team is file sharing. Opening wrong or old versions of shared files, mistanking documents or standards is usual as we do not have a centralized storage, so with that in mind i aimed to create a small NAS server that i can share with my team, even while working distant from each other.
Last night i made some pretty good advancements, replaced the thermal paste, reassembled everything, except the turn on switch and tried turning the machine on with a screwdriver. And it worked!
I reinstalled the latest windows version, only to have some canvas to work on, but i'm thinking a lot about switching to linux NAS. My only fear is that i go to deep for a first time project and end up screwing everything.
Hopefully tonight i'll be able to control the server from my main computer and start working on the first steps.
As soon as i got my hands on the "new" computer, that would be the server i got some bad news. It was diagnosed dead (by a crappy technician that only wanted to sell a new one to my girlfriend's mother)
So i opened it up to have a better look and impressively it was pretty clean for a 13 year old computer. However there are some issues.
All fans were dirty, not blocked by dust, but in very poor condition
Thermal paste was lacking
Some of the cables were disconected (probably the reason why the computer didn't run anymore)
So as the next step i'm aiming on cleaning the computer, replacing the thermal paste. I do own a graphics card suitable for the machine, but in order to save some money in energy i'm probably only going to upgrade the RAM
This project is not a recent one, i've been thinking a lot of it in the past year, and the kick off would be finding an old PC and getting it running, this should be an easy one, however, living in Brazil, old computers could come to arround R$900,00, what would be arround 183,99 dolars (for an 10 year old machine).
So i postergated the project, a lot.
Luckily, my girlfriend's mother recently changed computers and gave away her old one to me.
So now i'm one step closer, even though the computer still needs some new hard drives.
