DIY evaporative cooler.

My house has been getting hot this summer so I had to do something, as it was getting pretty miserable.

I crafted up an evaporative cooler in the window with some cheap air filters a fountain pump, Gorilla tape and some tubing. Cost was minimal, and its been dropping the ambient temperature in my house noticeably.

My house this summer has been getting really hot.  Living in the northwest is usually pretty good, and I don't deal well with heat so I had to do somthing.

  • 4 × Filtrete Basic flat panel air filter. They are non fibreglas paper wrapped edges. $3.75 for each 2 pack
  • 1 × Smartpond 560gph pond pump. It has a 14 foot lift, so its ok for wherever I place the sump. Cost $55
  • 1 × Black vinyl rubber tubing 3/8" 25 feet of tubing. I'm only using about 10ft. The rest is knotted off, and goes back into the sump $14
  • 1 × Gorilla tape About 10 feet of tape. $5
  • 1 × Radio shack antenna pole A steel antenna mast 10' long. $20 .. They cost more now, I've been hanging onto these a while.

Basically I set this up in about an hour.   I put a foot deep hole in the flower bed and gave the antenna mast a moderate soil base to keep it from moving.  I also used a piece of yellow twine and and two small penny nails to keep it from swaying up top.  I put a V bend in the air filters and sewed a trash bag onto the filters to catch the runoff and flow in back into the sump.  I sewed the vinyl tubing to the air filter in a few spots with yellow twine to keep it from moving around  and cut  pretty small notches in the tubing across the top to turn it into a soaker hose.   It does not need to be a large amount of water, just enough to keep the fabric mesh wet.  Inside air is pulled in with a box fan.  No water has to come in contact with your window sill.   Very few drips make it to the ground, and water loss is kept to a minimum.  One or two  gallons every other day
