A few friends and i had the idea to do something crazy, start an ISP. With all of this talk about Net Neutrality, we were pretty certain that it was going to pass
I, too, have contemplated this idea; however, I want to start a gigabit fiber service. The primary impedance I've encountered is engineering a business model that includes: 1. contracting a tier 1 o 2 telecom company to provide the main internet connection, 2. contracting the installation of new fiber to make a complete connection between the office and the end user, and 3. convincing customers to commit to a long term contract before the fiber network is completed, meaning the service can't be activated when the contract is signed. This happens to be the same problem Google seems to have. A coaxial cable service might be a better bet since the infrastructure is already in place.....
Yeah, a few friends and I have been thinking about this, and we think the way to do it is to find a city that already has google fiber in it, buy lines from the city, and try to beat their prices.
From a business standpoint, that is definitely the better way to do it. But, I'm selfish and want fiber internet in my area and it seems that will only happen if I (or others like myself) make it happen. I just need to find a bunch of people in my area that want gigabit fiber.
