Man Hole Alert

A Safety alert system for motorists and pedestrians when drainage covers lift up during floods

Similar projects worth following
Indian roads during the monsoon season often resemble waterlogged mazes, making it nearly impossible to predict the presence of manhole openings beneath the murky waters. This hazardous scenario has posed a severe threat to the safety of riders and pedestrians alike.

Introducing the "Responsible Project: Manhole Alert System" – an ingenious, cost-effective innovation designed to address a significant challenge faced by riders during the monsoon season in India. This system aids municipalities in proactively maintaining their manholes through a simple IoT solution. Leveraging the principles of buoyancy, it deploys a warning sign to alert riders and provides real-time notifications to the concerned authorities.

Our goal is to make monsoon commutes safer, one road at a time. With the Manhole Alert System, we aim to transform the safety of Indian roadways during the monsoon season, offering a ray of hope amid the deluge.

The Safety Manhole system consists of an alert mechanism that rises up as the water level breaches the maximum level. The alert system warns pedestrians and motorists by flashing a high-beam LED light. The Municipality is also alerted by using LoRa wireless transmission.

To optimize maximum efficiency, electronics mounted on the drain cover work on low-power modes and transmit low-power wireless signals to a nearby Mater unit. The master unit is connected to a public utility system such as a street light and can act as an aggregator for multiple manhole alert systems nearby. The master unit sends an alert that a specific manhole water level has been breached due to flooding to the municipality. This is either done by using a LoRa-based wireless system or via 4G / 5G network.

As opposed to previous displacement detection, a simpler method would be to detect water as it reaches the bottom of the manhole cover thus also giving a pre-emptive warning. This is done by using a noncontact water level sensor.

Measuring altitude by using sensor fusion and considering results from both the Pressure Sensor and Altimeter resulted in accurate measurements only upto a meter. The resolution is far to less to accurately detect a manhole cover rising by a couple of centimeters.
