This project was created on 03/18/2016 and last updated 7 years ago.

Description

It is desirable to know the performance of combustion engines in order to make wise decisions regarding operating habits, maintenance, and design impact.

This project is designed to create custom software that utilizes off the shelf inexpensive industry standard existing hardware. Standard sensors and a small color LCD or RGB monitor will display critical engine performance values including:
RPM
Accelerometer and compass
Fuel pressure
Fuel flow/consumption
Estimated fuel/range remaining
Combustion mixture
Manifold pressure
Cylinder head temperature
Exhaust gas temperature
Exhaust gas pollution
Oil temperature
Oil pressure
Air temperature & humidity
charging volts & amps

Customizable for 1 to 6 cylinder engines. Estimated cost less than $99.

  • Expanded External Analog IO

    Jan Zumwalt • 03/31/2016 at 09:29 • 0 comments

Because this project will require considerably more IO ports that any micro-controller can provide, I identified the best IO expansion candidate as the MCP3008. It is a $4 16pin dip ADC with 8ch@10bits over SPI interface. Since SPI can be daisy chained and only requires 4 IO pins, perhaps 2 of them will serve all the analog interface needs.

    Application

16ch total = 4ch EGT, 4ch cht, 1ch oil pressure, 1ch oil temp, 1ch fuel psi, 1ch fuel gph, 1ch manifold psi, 1ch air temp, 1ch humidty, 1ch air psi

Code for proof of concept I tested http://www.hertaville.com/interfacing-an-spi-adc-mcp3008-chip-to-the-raspberry-pi-using-c.html

Hi, did you have overview or hardware ideas for measuring the RPM from the ignition system without damage the embedded electronic ?

Here is a project update and I would like to thank everyone for following the Engine Monitor project - I am slooowly getting some winter work accomplished on it. I've been working on the ignition system so it can be started this spring. Pictures will soon follow :)

I wanted to thank everyone who is following the Engine Monitor project. I just moved and had placed this project on the back burner this past year. I now have two VW engines that need to be prepared for flying next year and intend to finish this project this fall/winter. I have a wonderful new shop with the space and tools I need :)

Just from what I've heard, I'd suspect that is a narrow band sensor intended for OEM type use, and it won't indicate correctly outside a narrow range near Stoic.  People doing engine tuning need a wide band sensor.  If that IS wideband (or can be made to work decently as such, maybe just indicating "to rich / to lean") then its a great price spec.

This looks like it would be useful for all the same things an Air–fuel ratio meter would be good for, plus some... at much lower cost.  Can you actually pull that off?  I know the sensors don;t cost much and just put out voltage, so it may be possible.  If so, I'd love to have one, as would tons of guys who try to tune old motorcycles, etc.
