Maybe you need ultra thin custom display, this is solution ....
Why charlieplexing? because it is for my like piece of magic.

FEATURES:

- 1.05x0.48 inches (26.67x12.22 mm)
- 30 led
- any color
- ultra thin .... etc. on 0.8mm board
- only 6 gpio
- ideal for wrist watch

This is good to know :-) #PICTIL uses 0402 but no charlieplexing to reach higher speed.
Now I wonder how to do charlieplexing in TTL gates :-D

There are so many applications to use your great "pcb sandwich" idea for a display!  Are your 0802 LEDs the "side view" type that you just soldered upright?  or better yet, can you tell me the manufacturer number of the LED?
