Thanks for taking a look at my projects. The programming is easy if you buy the right hardware. I used a nanowii arduino board (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__22322__MultiWii_NanoWii_ATmega32U4_Micro_Flight_Controller_USB_GYRO_ACC.html).
This board has the sensors needed for a quadcopter (gyro, accelerometer) and you can plug your motor controllers into it. You don't need to use this exact board but try to find an arduino board that is designed for quadcopters.
To program this board I used the MultiWii software (http://www.multiwii.com/). This software has a lot of features and supports the nanowii board so it is fairly simple to configure it. In my case I had to do some heavy modifications to get it working with a PS2 controller. If you purchase a standard RC remote (not for an RC car, for flying) then you don't need to modify the MultiWii software.
I purchased my RC remote, motors, propellers and motor controllers (ESC) from hobbyking. I suggest you look up some guides about how to use MultiWii or how to build a quadcopter. There should be lots of information out there to help you.

I thought of using an Arduino but I have no idea about programming. The drone mass will be between 0.25 - 1kg
